The politics of California south of the LA County line has become a battleground. The transition was noticeable near the start of the 21st century when both San Diego and Orange counties began preferring Democratic presidential nominees. After decades of Republican votes, San Diego County went first in 2008 giving Democrat Barack Obama 54 percent support. Orange County made the change in 2016 breaking with its deep Republican roots to back Hillary Clinton.

The Pacific Chapter of the American Association of Public Opinion Research (PAPOR) will hold its annual convention for the first time in San Diego County on August 14 to 15 at the Bahia Resort Hotel. There will be panels of pollsters and research experts on Orange and San Diego counties changing politics, attitudes and demographics, public opinion on wildfire and climate change, and other opinion topics.
