Photo: Andrew Harnik/Getty ImagesPeggy Noonan called it a presidency in a persistent state of precarity. Her takedown of his behavior was titled "Trump is starting to look precarious". Americans agree. In the last month he has lost support and is now 40% approval on the conservative website RealClearPolitics. On the more neutrally curated site FiftyPlusOne, his approval is 36% with disapproval of 60% - a 24-point net negative, and a record low.

The latest House midterm projections show Democrats winning between 23 to 29 seats. They need 3 to take a majority.

Key factors helping the Democrats:
- Trump approval now at or below 40%.
- The generic ballot test about 6 for Democrats.
- The persistence of the war in Iran and its effect on the economy.
